Fabric purchasing units / VTEX

Buying fabric by the linear metre: Specify units, widths and quantities

VTEX fabric is measured in linear metres. One linear metre is one metre of fabric length at the selected product’s width, so quantities and prices must include width information. Clear units help workshops and distributors avoid confusion between length, area and roll counts.

What is one linear metre?

A request for 100 linear metres at 240cm width means 100m in length and a width of 240cm. At 280cm width, the length remains 100m but the specification is different. Always include width when stating metres or comparing unit prices.

This guide does not use square metres as the quotation unit. Write “linear metres” or “m” together with the width so each enquiry line uses the same basis.

Allocate linear metres to each specification

An enquiry may include several fabrics, but each product needs its own metre quantity. If one product has different finishes, colours or widths, specify the quantity for each combination. Do not provide only a combined total and leave the recipient to allocate it.

For example, specify T300 CVC, white 3cm stripes, 260cm width and estimated linear metres; or white plain 70gsm lining, 240cm width and estimated linear metres. Enter the actual material requirement rather than substituting finished-set quantities for fabric metres.

Roll count does not replace a stated length

Do not assume all rolls have the same length without confirmation. If a purchasing plan is expressed in rolls, establish the corresponding linear metres for the product before agreeing quantities and order value.

Likewise, quantities of pillowcases, pillow inserts or stuffed toys do not directly establish the required fabric metres. The workshop must calculate from component dimensions, cutting layout, width and its chosen allowance.

Request a quotation per linear metre from VTEX

Select a listed product, finish, colour and width, then enter estimated linear metres. T233 Cotton and lining fabrics have 240cm width; T300 CVC has 260/280cm; T200 coloured stripes have only 240cm. Check each product’s options rather than applying one width to the whole order.

Add the delivery area and required timing. For staged deliveries, state the quantity for each stage. Pricing and the supply proposal are confirmed for the actual enquiry and do not arise automatically from a metre calculation.
