How to calculate fabric metres for bedding production

To calculate fabric metres, convert finished quantities into cutting-piece lists and layouts for the actual width. Multiplying bed dimensions or bedding-set quantities alone does not replace this step.

Step 1: Break the finished product down into cutting pieces

List sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases with their quantities. For each item, identify the number and dimensions of cutting pieces agreed by the workshop's technical team.

Finished dimensions and cutting dimensions are not always identical. The workshop should include seams, plackets, hems and construction details in its pattern; do not apply one allowance to every design.

Step 2: Select the correct width and specification

Width determines the cutting layout. T250 CVC offers 240/260/280cm, T300 CVC offers 260/280cm and T350 Cotton offers 280cm. Select the correct code before calculating the layout.

For striped fabric, the workshop needs to establish cutting direction for the design. Recheck the layout when width or surface changes rather than retaining the previous consumption estimate.

Step 3: Calculate length from the cutting layout

If a cutting layout is L metres long and produces N complete sets of pieces, its consumption per set is L ÷ N metres. Total length depends on the number of lays or layout repetitions and the length of each.

Hypothetical calculation example: a 12m layout producing four sets uses 3m per set. Repeating that layout ten times gives 120m for 40 sets. This is not a consumption specification for a VTEX product or any particular bedding set.

Step 4: List additional requirements separately

List metres for sampling, production adjustments or reserves separately with their purpose. Do not add a fixed waste percentage without data for the workshop and design.

If suitable material is already in stock, check usable metres before calculating additional purchases. Do not combine different codes or colours as interchangeable stock.

Step 5: Submit requirements by product code

A quotation request should state the fabric, surface, colour, width, metres and required date. When comparing widths, clearly identify alternative options so they are not treated as simultaneous orders.
