Receiving fabric rolls: What should a sewing workshop check before cutting?
When receiving fabric rolls, compare the delivery with the agreed specification before cutting. This checklist supports receiving work; it does not replace the acceptance criteria agreed for an order.
Prepare the agreed specification
Compare the order specification and delivery documents: code, composition, GSM, width, colour, surface and agreed quantity. Separate each code in mixed deliveries. Do not infer specifications from a roll’s position in a package.
For example, T250 CVC and T300 CVC differ in composition, GSM and widths. A shared white 3cm stripe appearance does not make them the same fabric. Check the code before moving a roll into production.
Separate quantity checks from quality checks
Record roll counts and labelled or documented metres by code. Roll count alone does not establish total metres when roll lengths vary. If actual length must be verified, agree on the measurement method and record the results.
A complete delivery count does not establish compliance with every quality criterion. Composition, durability and test-dependent properties cannot all be verified visually. Use the agreed documentation or inspection method for each criterion.
Inspect the surface before cutting
Following the workshop’s inspection process, compare colour, plain/stripe surface, stripe direction and visible issues such as marks, tears or surface differences. Use consistent viewing conditions when comparing samples from several rolls.
Record the roll identifier, location of the finding, photos and a short description. Do not apply an invented universal acceptance threshold to all fabrics; use the order’s agreed criteria.
Report discrepancies clearly
If a discrepancy is found, separate the affected roll and discuss it with the supplier before using that material. Identify the code, affected quantity and clarification needed. Keep the agreed response for warehouse and production teams.
For the next order, submit a specification listing code, width, colour, surface and metres so delivery checks use the same reference. A VTEX quotation request can include multiple products.
